“Is Shop Teacher disappointed that he doesn’t have a son to work in the garage with him?”
I would like all those folks to kindly piss off.
I swapped the winter wheels ont o my truck today. My oldest put on the center caps, helped me load supplies for the rallycross tomorrow, helped me hitch up the RallyMetro, and did most of the work putting on Mommy’s new license plates.

Plus, girls’ hands are smaller and better for reaching those hard to get at bolts!

Werd!
On the balance, the girls in my shop classes do better work, and are safer, than the boys.

Cool!
And even if you didn’t have any kids, you could make your students do the
work for you :p

My father in law is a former mechanic and didn’t get around to teaching his daughters how to even change a tire, and I don’t get it.

That makes no sense.

I know, right!
I did throw her a 5-spot for her savings up jar. She didn't complain, she didn't give up, and it was cold outside.

Even adult women are better equipped here. Let me tell you how many headlights I’ve changed for people because otherwise they need to remove the battery.

There are a great many things that man does that make no sense. It's frankly baffling my wife turned out the way she did.

My gf works in insurance, and her job is to work directly with customers and with the body shops that repair customers’ vehicles. Twice this week, after making determinations on whether or not repairs were warranted, was asked, “So, is a guy going to look at this?”
She holds her own when arguing with body shops, so the customer arguments are typically over before they start. It still gets to her when it happens though...and the shops know not to tangle with her.

Lol it’s nice to have kids that are interested in helping !

Whatever Oppo said that should be banned immediately.

On the flip side my son gets bored , and asks to leave almost anytime I ask him to help me with car stuff. But that usually when I’m standing around with no clue what I need to do. He does like doing the easy stuff like oil, and tire changes

That’s just sad. Then again I taught my older sister how to change a tire when she was 26, I was 21 at the time.
And of coarse this was on the side of a highway. She got a flat and called me to help her even when I was 30 minutes away. The icing on the cake was that her car had those goofy antitheft lugnuts but she didn’t have the socket. I had to run to auto zone and buy a universal on, that basically had some big cone shaped reverse threads, and a set of new lug nuts. It was fun, and she learned that knowing a tiny bit about your car can save you a lot of trouble.
This is the same sister that bought a normal Lancer, thinking it was cool, because the Evo from 2 Fast 2 Furious is her dream car.

Wait you actually are a shop teacher? Cool. Always seemed like a fun job if you do it right. I’ve had great shop teachers, and I’ve also had one where the 70% of the class failed a written test because he was a idiot. I got a 76 on that test which is the only time I’ve had the highest grade in a class.

Every time you post the girls in action, I’ m smiling. I hope they develop the interest personally rather than just doing it to hang with Dad, because then there’s a chance they won’t drop away in the tween years. My girl is becoming a teenager, and I’ m praying we can hold on to the things we still share. She does still love looki ng at cars though.

My mother-in-law was a home- ec teacher... My wife doesn’t know how to cook and has never used an iron.

Who the hell said that? M daughter just turned 2 and I’m constantly showing her talking to her about what I’m working on. She’s had her own little tool set since she was 8 months old.

meanwhile in 16 years my daughter still cant fix her bike when the chain comes off... no interest in learning either
she prefers to act helpless maybe turn on the waterworks and get someone else to do it for her.....
i think i need to make another one... this one will never be a gearhead :p

That's even worse! The mechanic isn't a TEACHER! What the duece lady!?!

I have no doubt!

Yeah, I teach middle school shop.
I haven't given a quiz or a test in like a decade.

What a bunch of assholes. Show me one tool or one aspect of fixing a car, that requires one to put their schlong into it?
![]() 11/11/2018 at 06:55 |

I hope so too. She loved the Sprint car race I took her to this summer, and doesn't understand why she can't come to the rallycross tomorrow (well, today now). I'm hopeful, because most of the time she was putting the center caps on, I was doing other things. She kept at it!
![]() 11/11/2018 at 06:56 |

That's unfortunate. But yeah, some people just aren't interested.
![]() 11/11/2018 at 06:57 |

She definitely needs a task as well . The tough part is finding enough things that she can do, to keep her occupied.

cant force it... but it does annoy me she’s unwilling to learn to atleast do roadside easy fixes to her bike... must be city living... the potential for getting stuck in the boonies is pretty low here.. least for her as she rarely cycles further than she could walk anyway
![]() 11/11/2018 at 06:59 |

Several people have said that or similar. Some of said it to me directly, but most to my wife. It's the most tone deaf comment I could imagine. I teach middle school shop for crying out loud, to lots of girls, and they're awesome at it. I'm way more likely to turn my back on a girl using a power tool, than a boy.

Oh, nobody on Oppo is that dense! Y'all cool :)
![]() 11/11/2018 at 07:02 |

Full disclosure, she wanted to earn some money. She worked hard, she didn't whine, and she never gave up. I threw her a fiver. We had fun together, and I hate putting the center caps on, and she did most of that work :)
![]() 11/11/2018 at 07:43 |
|
Yeah, that is annoying.
![]() 11/11/2018 at 09:09 |

Yeah, but she’s learning - and kids that age usually don’t want to do anything they hate, even for money.

Nice. I almost want to be a teacher just to have some small effect on our messed up educational system, but then I remember that I would have to go back to school to do that, and part of said. Stupid educational system. A system that doesn’t work for me.

That’s awesome, makes me wish I had a daughter. Instead I have to settle for my niece, who hasn’t shown much potential yet but she’s way tougher than my older nephew, jury’s still out on the youngest one. Maybe someday we’ll adopt but we’ve decided against biological kids for a multitude of reasons.

This is true!

Yeah, you have to be able to do school pretty well to make it through. I wasn't a fantastic student, but I was good enough, and I'm a good test taker.

They're interesting to see how their personalities develop.

Test were my strong suit. Home work, note taking, and rule following... not so much.
I once got a 98 on a final for a class I failed, because the notes counted for 30% of your grade was notes.. which 8 never took.
![]() 11/11/2018 at 22:03 |
|
I always took notes, because the act of writing them is what made me remember the material. I rarely did more than skim them to study for a test though.

Having 3 daughters, I know your pain.
Usually my response is something like this: “Other than piss standing up, what can a boy do that my girls cannot?!”
It usually ends those conversations very quickly.
![]() 11/12/2018 at 09:03 |
|
I like that response, I’m going to use that.
If we’re specifically talking about working in the garage or on the house, I’ll say something to the effect of, “None of these tools require you to stick a penis inside of them.”

Am I too late? Did someone already post this?
